Program 5: New practical method for measuring chicken litter moisture

A new, quick method for measuring the moisture content in chicken litter has been developed, which could be easily adopted for poultry farmers. Researchers from the Department of Primary Industries Queensland in Program 5 have introduced the ‘bucket method’ using simple equipment already found on farms – a standard bucket and hanging scales.

This method aims to provide a moisture content reading in less than a minute, making it an economically practical solution for farmers.

Initial tests have shown that this method gives a useful estimate of litter moisture content, although results can vary depending on the type of litter material. Further testing is progressing to calibrate with different litter materials and ensure the method’s accuracy and reliability.

This new method could help farmers better manage litter moisture with no additional cost, which is crucial for maintaining a healthy environment for chickens. By keeping litter moisture at optimal levels, farmers can improve the health and well-being of their flocks.
